    Bounded Guaranteed Algorithms for Concave Impurity Minimization Via Maximum Likelihood

    Partitioning algorithms play a key role in many scientific and engineering disciplines. A partitioning algorithm divides a set into a number of disjoint subsets or partitions. Often, the quality of the resulted partitions is measured by the amount of impurity in each partition, the smaller impurity the higher quality of the partitions. In general, for a given impurity measure specified by a function of the partitions, finding the minimum impurity partitions is an NP-hard problem. Let MM be the number of NN-dimensional elements in a set and KK be the number of desired partitions, then an exhaustive search over all the possible partitions to find a minimum partition has the complexity of O(KM)O(K^M) which quickly becomes impractical for many applications with modest values of KK and MM. Thus, many approximate algorithms with polynomial time complexity have been proposed, but few provide bounded guarantee. In this paper, an upper bound and a lower bound for a class of impurity functions are constructed. Based on these bounds, we propose a low-complexity partitioning algorithm with bounded guarantee based on the maximum likelihood principle. The theoretical analyses on the bounded guarantee of the algorithms are given for two well-known impurity functions Gini index and entropy. When Kβ‰₯NK \geq N, the proposed algorithm achieves state-of-the-art results in terms of lowest approximations and polynomial time complexity O(NM)O(NM). In addition, a heuristic greedy-merge algorithm having the time complexity of O((Nβˆ’K)N2+NM)O((N-K)N^2+NM) is proposed for K<NK<N. Although the greedy-merge algorithm does not provide a bounded guarantee, its performance is comparable to that of the state-of-the-art methods. Our results also generalize some well-known information-theoretic bounds such as Fano's inequality and Boyd-Chiang's bound.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figure

    Construction of Design Science Research Questions

    Posing research questions represents a fundamental step to guide and direct how researchers develop knowledge in research. In design science research (DSR), researchers need to pose research questions to define the scope and the modes of inquiry, characterize the artifacts, and communicate the contributions. Despite the importance of research questions, research provides few guidelines on how to construct suitable DSR research questions. We fill this gap by exploring ways of constructing DSR research questions and analyzing the research questions in a sample of 104 DSR publications. We found that about two-thirds of the analyzed DSR publications actually used research questions to link their problem statements to research approaches and that most questions focused on solving problems. Based on our analysis, we derive a typology of DSR question formulation to provide guidelines and patterns that help researchers formulate research questions when conducting their DSR projects

    ECG signals in measurements are contaminated by noises including power line interference. In recent years, adaptive filters with different approaches have been investigated to remove power line interference in ECG.In this paper, an adaptive filter is proposed to cancel power line interference in ECG signals. The proposed algorithm is experimented with MIT-BIH ECG signals data base. The algorithm2019;s results are compared with the results of other adaptive filter algorithms using Least Mean Square (LMS), Normalized Least Mean Square (NLMS) by Signal to Noise (SNR). Theses works are performed by LabVIEW software

    Special Issue Editorial: Introduction to Design Science Education

    We propose conceptualizing design science education in the information systems (IS) discipline. While design science has become a robust research paradigm, well-recognized in solving practical problems, how design science should be taught is a question that IS scholars, academia, and practitioners are only now addressing. We do so by considering design science education as a pedagogical tool that engages IS students in design knowledge creation and authentic learning. We conceptualize design science education as three intersections: research-education, research-practice, and education-practice. We further use this conceptualization to introduce six new studies in design science education

    Modified moth swarm algorithm for optimal economic load dispatch problem

    In this study, optimal economic load dispatch problem (OELD) is resolved by a novel improved algorithm. The proposed modified moth swarm algorithm (MMSA), is developed by proposing two modifications on the classical moth swarm algorithm (MSA). The first modification applies an effective formula to replace an ineffective formula of the mutation technique. The second modification is to cancel the crossover technique. For proving the efficient improvements of the proposed method, different systems with discontinuous objective functions as well as complicated constraints are used. Experiment results on the investigated cases show that the proposed method can get less cost and achieve stable search ability than MSA. As compared to other previous methods, MMSA can archive equal or better results. From this view, it can give a conclusion that MMSA method can be valued as a useful method for OELD problem

    Structure and Electrical Properties of the Thin Gold Leaves Fabricated by Vietnam Traditional Laminating Technology

    The structure and electrical properties of the thin gold leaves fabricated by Vietnam traditional laminating technology are introduced. The gold leaves are usually created with the average size of 3x3cm, and 200nm thickness, they can easily be broken when handling carelessly. By the measurements of X-ray Diffraction (XRD), and Electron Scanning Microscopy (SEM), the structure and surface morphology were investigated. We have also measured the absorption spectra and determined the resistivity of the samples and found that the gold films possessed the Ca impurities stuck on the surface of the leaves. The conductivity of the films is relatively higher and the absorption maximum is red-shifted in comparison with that of the bulk
